Customizing your Portrait Session with Family Heirlooms | Southern Indiana Photographer

One of my favorite ways to customize portrait sessions is by using special props that my clients bring from home. This could be an antique wooden crib that your grandmother slept in as a baby, a painting your father always kept in his office, or the timeless outfit you, yourself, might have been photographed in as a toddler. For this session, Jessica and her family brought in a beautiful heirloom painting, which I built our color palette around, a grandmother’s ornate lamp, to add warmth, and a rocking chair that older family members were once rocked to sleep in. It was perfect for her two-year-old to cuddle in with his mom at the beginning of the session as he was getting used to his new surroundings at the studio.ย

For the second half of our session, we changed up our color palette to more earthy tones and incorporated a small wooden toy truck that Jessica’s son loves to play with. I love that in years to come, they can use these images and the sentimental objects in them that exist in their home as a gauge for growth as their little grows up. These are the details that are so important to me that I create in my portraits.
